Are you a creatively minded developer who can take the lead from concept through to technical architecture and development?  Grumpy Sailor are looking for a passionate technical guru who is interested in finding the best solution to a problem, and leading a team to deliver it. 

Grumpy Sailor is an agile, creative laboratory experimenting with digital technology and storytelling. We work with digital (physical and screen-based) tools, filmmaking and design platforms and are interested in new ideas, new methods and new platforms. Some of our collaborators include Google’s Creative Lab Sydney and Google Australia, The State Library, Art Gallery of NSW and the World Wildlife Fund.

We are looking for a software developer to join our team of grumps, to be responsible for holding Grumpy Sailor to a technical standard and to work with our team to design solutions for our projects.

You enjoy rapid prototyping and will pick the right toolkit to realise a product, and won’t mind that we often work quick and dirty to produce a proof-of-concept. That said, you know when a project needs to be delivered robustly and polished and you have proven experience delivering secure, high-end and high-profile digital solutions. 

You will be responsible for managing the technical implementation of projects, online and offline from concept to completion across all levels of the business. You will be required to lead the internal development team and, at times, contractors and external suppliers, steering the team towards a shared technical vision. 

We are looking for someone who has a background in web and/or mobile software development with proven experience architecting solutions to a range of technical problems. You’ve probably dabbled in different languages, and feel like a jack of all trades, though you do have a domain where you feel most comfortable.

Qualifications + Experience //

  • A strong and demonstrable portfolio of software projects.
  • 7+ years experience in software development, web and/or mobile. 
  • Experience within a creative industry preferred.
  • BA/BS or equivalent practical experience.

Duties + Responsibilities //

  • Establish and modify procedures for defining development practices, documenting the overall architecture, and maintaining quality and accuracy in the development process.
  • Provide direction and technical expertise in design and development. 
  • Identify areas that require attention and work with the Project Manager to ensure time and resources are dedicated to continually improving our situation and reducing areas of concern.
  • Provides leadership and professional development of team members.
  • Ensure efficiency by delegating and allocating responsibilities to the more junior members of the development team.
  • Create or contribute to concepts through hands-on development and management of technical details of a large projects, as well as mentoring other developers internally or guiding an external vendor.
  • Demonstrate a creative spark and the ability to collaborate effectively with art directors, writers, user experience designers and all other creative thinkers.
  • Instill a culture of accountability and reliability among members of the team.
  • Stay current on relevant technology and conducts necessary research and development testing to assess emerging technology options.
  • Educate The Grumps about new or innovative technologies available. 
  • Deal with the day-to-day issues that arise on technical projects. (You should be comfortable assisting developers and sharing your knowledge with others).
  • Implement robust, reliable and secure technology solutions.
  • Drive the team and him or herself to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Skills + Competencies //

  • At least 7 years full-stack software development, with a preference for additional native development experience also eg. Java.
  • Equal parts creative collaborator, technical problem solver and technical visionary.
  • Rock-solid technical experience of both front-end and back-end development along with a preference for open source frameworks, social technologies and APIs. (The Grumps often use a lot of JavaScript and Python, but are looking for someone with a wide range of technical skills and experience).
  • Possess an excellent knowledge of different client/server architectures and various compatibility requirements across web and mobile.
  • Ability to manage change efficiently, communicating information to keep the wider team informed of changes.
  • As a lead, experience in mentoring junior developers is expected.
  • Is equally happy to hack together a lo-fi prototype, or take a project through to a polished and public facing product or platform.
  • A history of working with physical products is highly desirable.
  • Someone who is comfortable with the unknown… or even seeks it out!

Some of our collaborators include Google’s Creative Lab Sydney and Google Australia, The State Library, Art Gallery of NSW and the World Wildlife Fund.

We are looking for a designer to work with our Creative Director, and to be responsible for holding Grumpy Sailor to a high visual standard.

You will be responsible for the design and implementation of visual solutions, online and offline from concept to completion across all levels of the business. This is a role that has a great deal of variety in the work, you will at times be required to art-direct contractors and external suppliers.

We are looking for someone who has a background in graphic design and branding, with strong and recent experience in user-interface design and digital concepting. Examples of physical design work whilst not necessary will be looked upon favourably.

Qualifications + Experience //

  • Evidence of formal training as well as 5+ years design experience within the creative industry.

Duties + Responsibilities //

  • Oversee all creative communication for the business, in consultation with the Creative Director and team.
  • Oversee all web design and UI alongside web developers and other specialists.
  • Create inspiring, strategic, and innovative ideas for the business and clients that work in a fully integrated manner, both online and offline.
  • Maintain brand integrity to best represent the company, visually and verbally and develop company assets including stationary, signage, docs, websites, merchandise, and invitations. 
  • Create visual assets for projects including but not limited to branding and identity, marketing collateral and user-interfaces.
  • Produce and present conceptual sketches, storyboards and/or scamps to best communicate ideas with a strong understanding of the target audience and business strategy.
  • Converse with creative, art, copywriting, or production heads to discuss client requirements and present concepts.
  • Liaise with external suppliers, ie printers and occasionally work with moving image artists to support and oversee the finished product, ie video edit, motion graphics.
  • Design all presentation documents for internal and external client pitches.
  • An interest in industrial / physical design would be advantageous.

Skills + Competencies //

  • High level proficiency in design, web and multimedia software and applications, such as Adobe Creative Suite. 
  • Ability to work to a creative brief and show an understanding of the target market and project goals.
  • An understanding of user-centered design principles looked upon favourably.

  • Drawing and sketching skills a plus.
  • Understanding of CSS and markup would be a valuable competency.
